Bokuto Machimise 2010

Bokuto Machimise is an art program featuring the Bokuto district’s rich, nostalgic downtown atmosphere. Located east of the Sumida River, the Bokuto district has attracted cultural celebrities since Edo Period and has been known as the birthplace of many cultures. The rich flavors of the Edo-Tokyo downtown worker and merchant culture still exist in the Bokuto district with shopping arcades and alleyways reminiscent of Showa Japan. Bokuto Machimise includes art projects and workshops featuring the unique culture of this district. In 2009, 17 artist groups, its core being the local artists, held art exhibitions of works that utilized local resources and put together projects evoking new communication among people in the area. This program has provided opportunities for local residents to discover the attraction of their own neighborhoods and to discuss its potentials as well as issues; inspired by the program, residents have embarked on various activities.
