Kuro Tanino (Writer/Director)
Born in Toyama in 1976. A former psychiatrist. Founded his own theater company, “Niwa gekidan Penino” in 2000. Prefers utilizing stages that comprise installation art, presenting performances at his home or in an outdoor tent; favors locations over theater venues. He has presented many “atypical” plays that freely transcend the framework of existing theatrical performance. The first full-scale plays that he wrote, “Fortification of Smile” (2007) and “Starry Shadow Jr.” (2008) were nominated as finalists for the Kishida Kunio Drama Award, in consecutive years. “Starry Shadow Jr.” was uniquely composed as a play-within-a-play in which adults perform as a “fake family” as part of a child training program, and trained children move about in a world of delusion. His unique imagination and dramatic interpretation has attracted attention, and in recent years he has directed “The Wild Duck” (2007) and “Little Eyolf” (2008) by Ibsen. Participated in Seika Engekisai (Seika Theatre Festival) (2004 in Osaka) and F/T (Festival/Tokyo) (2009 in Tokyo). Tanino has been invited to give numerous performances overseas, including in Taiwan (2004), Germany (2009), and Switzerland (2010).
