“Traditional Performing Arts for Kids” Recital ? Performances by children learning Japanese traditional performing arts and professional performers

The children, who have been instructed directly by first-class artists in Noh play, classical Japanese dance, koto music and Nagauta, have been training for 8 months. They will show the result of their efforts on the big stage.
Spectators will also be able to appreciate the performances of professional performers at each venue. (Admission is free. Numbered tickets required)

1. Noh play - Part 1-
Schedule: 10:00 ? 12:30 on Monday (national holiday) March 22, 2010
Venue: Hosho Nohgakudo
Performance: Komai and Kyogen (Izumi School / Okura School) “Usagi,” “Shibiri” / “Uji no Sarashi,” “Iroha” and more
Shimai and Rengin (Hosho School) “Ama,” “Genjo,” “Tsurukame,” “Shojo” and “Takasago”
Performance by professional performers:
Kyogen (Izumi School) “Nariagari” by Sukenori Miyake
Maibayashi (Hosho School) “Kasuga Ryujin” by Takashi Higashikawa

2. Noh play - Part 2-
Schedule: 13:30 ? 17:00 on Monday (national holiday) March 22, 2010
Venue: Hosho Nohgakudo

Outline

”Traditional Performing Arts for Kids” is an unprecedented and full-fledged participatory program for children who will experience traditional performing arts for the first time. Children will receive training directly from professional artists for eight months and will present the results on stage. In aiming for the goal of presenting performances, through experiencing traditional Japanese culture, individual characters and the world views of top-class artists, children will discover something new.
For future adults - this is the world we hope children will experience.

Synopsis

Genre

4 genres of Noh play, Japanese classical dance, koto music, and Nagauta Samisen in a total of 15 courses

Participants

10-24 students (from elementary, junior and senior high schools) in each course
* Participants will be selected randomly if there are too many applicants.

Venue

10 places in Tokyo

Participation fees

13,000 yen per course (for 23 sessions total, about 570 yen per session)
* Rental fees for accessories and costumes (10,000-15,000 yen) will be required.

Schedule

Monday, August 3, 2009 - Monday, March 29, 2010
*The schedule includes days for lessons and the date of the performance.

* Opening ceremony: All participants will gather in the National Noh Theater on Monday, August 3, 2009.

* From August 2009 through March 2010, a total of 21 lessons will be offered at 10 different locations in the Tokyo Metropolitan area.

* Performances by respective courses will be held at 3 different locations in March 2010.
