Synopsis
Through her free-spirited imagination, Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garcons) continually achieves fresh, new fashion designs imparting intellectual stimulation and a sense of fulfillment to the wearer ? clothing that can be considered a contemporary form of “luxury.”
As a special exhibit accompanying our “Luxury in fashion Reconsidered” exhibition, 30 avant-garde Comme des Garcons garments selected from the Kyoto Costume Institute (KCI) collection will be displayed in a space created by architect Kazuyo Sejima.
Noted for her revolutionary design approach in such projects as the Louvre-Lens and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa ? from an original point of view with her minimal use of transparent texture and shapes, characterized by making the connection between the built structure, the visitors, and the environment a part of the architectural program ? Sejima will reinterpret Comme des Garcons in a space that fully awakens the brand’s fresh vitality. The space, created with multiples of transparent acrylic, gives a sense of volume and a dazzling perspective illusion and transforms the connections between the audience’s bodies and the garments.
