Festival/Tokyo

Performing Arts Festival Launching from Tokyo

Outline

“Festival/Tokyo” is an International Festival of Performing Arts to be held in various cultural locations around Ikebukuro including the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space. The first Festival/Tokyo got off to a favorable start as an international festival of performing arts in reality and in name, which represents Japan. The audience of more than 60 thousand experienced and shared the festival.

The venues for this occasion will be the same three places around Ikebukuro as the first time (Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, Owl Spot and Nishi-sugamo Arts Factory). This time, a private theater, Theater Green at the east entrance to Ikebukuro station will be added. Thus, we will continue to make an effort to gain recognition and act in cooperation as a festival rooted in the community.

We aim to improve the program further by inheriting the trend of the first festival. Through international coproduction, the leading-edge creation is introduced to Japan in real time, and the works of the artists who attract people’s attention domestically are produced and presented to the world. We will expand the outreach projects, including the programs in which the citizens can actively participate, workshops and lectures and will improve the system where the real appeal of the performing arts is expressed.

Through this festival, with artists of the same age and all the citizens who will participate in, we will pursue the creation of new value, which opens the way to the next period, and promote the creation and presentation to the world from the international city of Tokyo.

Comments from the Festival Visitors (from Questionnaires)
・I support a scheme of this kind so that Tokyo can become a cultural city that can compare favorably to other cities in Europe and the US.
・I also dance, but the performance I saw was beyond the conventional boundaries of dance performance. It was so lively.
・I cannot express myself well, but it hit me hard. I need time to comprehend what I felt. I was overwhelmed by the performance. It was great.
・It is quite difficult to check programs regularly and go to see performances. I am glad that there is a festival like F/T where many programs are shown in a short period of time because it is easier to check and then go to see programs.
・The extras were well integrated into the performance on the stage. I think it is a great idea that the Japanese general public can participate in a performance at this level as extras.
・I was glad to see a great work. I was moved.
・It was difficult to understand, but it gave me satisfaction to watch something rare.
