Office of Tokyo Culture Creation Project – Message from the Senior Director
As a part of the ongoing cultural policy of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Tokyo Culture Creation Project aims to create and disseminate culture that is unique to Tokyo, nurture children through the arts and culture, and form bases for cultural activities in various different regions throughout the city.
The programs of Festival/Tokyo have enjoyed broad appeal, and parents and teachers have spoken enthusiastically of the programs that helped children experience culture and express their achievements:they have told us that the children’s faces and attitudes noticiably changed and called for an expansion of the programs. Thus public awareness of the project has been increasing, and this has given us a real sense of the roles of the administration. In addition, the Tokyo Artpoint Project has formed cultural bases in various areas throughout the city through cooperation with arts and cultural organizations and art NPOs.
In this fiscal year, which marks the program’s fourth year, we have defined the 11- day period from October 20th to– 30th as TOKYO CREATIVE WEEK. This will serve as a period in which people can experience a variety of different cultural programs in a concentrated manner in order to boost our ability to nationally and internationally disseminate. We encourage everyone to extensively experience the culture of Tokyo in this period.
Over the course of the WEEK, an international invitation program will be carried out by inviting directors, curators, critics, journalists and other highly perceptive and young specialists to Tokyo from overseas to have them observe various projects and exchange opinions with people in the related sectors. In addition, an international conference involving the invitees will be held in order to explore new social modalities and visions for the future.
With consideration of the city’s distinctive character and the significance of these roles played by the administration, we will continue our endeavor to strengthen the potential of Tokyo’s culture and draw both national and international attention to “Tokyo as a city of cultural creativity.”
